SUSSEX SCHOOLS BADMINTON NEWSLETTER

Issue 1 - September 2002

Welcome to the first newsletter of the 2002/03 season and also my first newsletter.  I have 2 children in Sussex Schools, Dean who is in the Under 17's and has represented England, and Kimberley who is in the Under 13's.  My partner Jason Large is the England Under 15 age group coach and is an individual coach.  So although I do not play myself I am surrounded by those who do.

Please let me know directly if you have any news about junior badminton in Sussex, tournament results etc., then I can share it with everyone else or if you would like to share an opinion.  We all have opinions, not necessary the same ones but I would like to think that we all hold the basic view of seeing Sussex Junior Badminton grow and flourish.  I can advertise badminton equipment for sale as well for you.

I can be contacted on Brighton 01273 388876 or e-mail - george4t@hotmail.com.  And for those of who are just starting out, in a couple of years Littlehampton or Bexhill will just seem down the road, trust me!

This newsletter is just one way of keeping in touch with what is happening on the Badminton scene locally. We have a link on the Sussex County B.A.'s website - go to www.sussexbadminton.org.uk, click on News and then on the School link.  Information on this page is sometimes subject to a short delay, as we rely on the site maintainer being available to update our page.  I have also set up a Sussex Schools site on www.badders.com, which is a website run by Badminton players and coaches for anyone interested in the sport. If you would like anything posted on that site, please e-mail me at tony.browne1@btinternet.com - it could be snippets of news, good performances, anything of interest.  We still hope to have our own website at some stage, watch this space.

TOURNAMENT NEWS

YORKSHIRE UNDER 19

Heather Olver and Dean George had an early start to the season by competing in the Yorkshire Under 19 tournament in York on August 24th.  An interesting venue, the hall was originally used to repair trains but it is now used just for badminton, yes that’s right no basketball lines to be confused with and it is in York town centre.  Heather got to the second round of the singles by beating the no 2 seed Jenny Day (Yorkshire) and Nikki Penn (Surrey) in the box and lost in the first round of the doubles with her partner Charity Barnes (Norfolk).  Dean won one game of singles in his box against Danny Capon (Kent) and lost the other to Neil White (Nottinghamshire).  He lost in the first round of the doubles with his partner Andy Ellis (Yorkshire) but in the mixed got to the second round with Ruth Coleman (Nottinghamshire).

ESBA SOUTH EAST UNDER 17

There were a number of Sussex entries in ESBA South East at Harlow on 7th September.  David Askey with doubles partner Neil Ryves (Nottinghamshire) won the doubles.  Luke Jones made it to the semi finals of the singles were he met Neil Ryves and lost in 3.  Dennis Caleb got to the quarters of the singles.  Josh Miles won one game of singles in his group.  Luke and Matthew Askey won one game of doubles in their group.  Kirsten Read was another Sussex representative.

WHY NOT BECOME A BADMINTON COACH? - BY GEORGE FRASER

In an endeavour to introduce new blood into the Sussex coaching scene and to utilize the talent and skills of our juniors I intend to organize a Coach Award Part 1 for suitable players in the age range 16+

The normal minimum age to take this award is 18 but a new initiative by the BaofE will allow players as young as 16 to take the CP1 award provided

  1. Candidates under 18 must attend a six-hour workshop devoted to communication skills and child protection before starting the CP1 award.
  2. Successful candidates who go in to pass the CP1 award can then work with qualified coaches but will not be certificated until their 18th birthday.
  3. They clearly possess very good racket skills

The coaching course will be held on December 14th, 15th, and 21st with the six-hour workshop being set for some convenient day prior.  After the coaching course there will be an eight week delay before the final assessment day when you will, over a total period of approximately 2 hours 'do your stuff' in front of the assessors.  During the eight weeks you will coach and log the coaching of a player or players of your choice.  This logbook together with a questionnaire will be submitted to your assessor for marking.  The foregoing is of necessity somewhat abbreviated and cryptic. I will of course be more than pleased to elaborate if required.

I would like to feel that those of you who qualify will in turn be willing to help with younger players at County level or a junior club level.  I know that many of you will be going away to University but this scheme is aimed at the future of badminton in Sussex and hopefully, many of you will 'return to the roost' at some point.

The Sussex County Badminton Association is supporting this initiative by making funds available to subsidise the course and I will be actively seeking more funds in an attempt to provide a 100% subsidy.
